SLEEPERS series, 0.93 x 0.6 m drypoint, monotype and acrylic on fabric
This series is based of Gustav Courbet’s ‘Le Sommeil’ (1866). The painting depicts two women on top of each other in bed. This voyeuristic depiction encapsulates the fetishisation of lesbians - a male painter using the women’s sexuality to show the spectator. Whilst a voyeuristic element still lies within my work, I’ve taken a feminist queer perspective on ‘Le Sommeil’ in order to retell the narrative.
